Shellac Nails: What to Expect

Shellac started as one brand's gel polish and became the word half the world uses for any gel manicure. Here's what an actual shellac appointment involves and how it compares to generic gel polish.

A client asked for "shellac" last month, and when I reached for the actual CND Shellac bottle, she stopped me. She meant gel, any gel, at any salon, in the way people say "Kleenex" for tissues regardless of brand. This mix-up happens constantly enough that it’s worth separating what the word technically means from what it’s come to mean in everyday use.

What shellac actually is

Shellac is a brand name. CND launched it in 2010 as a hybrid between regular nail polish and the acrylic-based gels available at the time, and it was genuinely a new category: a color coating with the durability of gel but a lighter, more polish-like feel. It cures under a UV or LED lamp, the same as gel polish generally, and it’s applied in the same base coat, color, top coat sequence.

Because CND’s product line dominated the early gel polish market, "shellac" stuck as the generic word the way "Xerox" stuck for photocopying. If your nail tech says they’re doing shellac, ask if they mean the CND brand specifically or gel polish generally. Most of the time it doesn’t change the appointment, but it matters if you’re chasing a specific brand’s formulation, shine, or flex.

A shellac appointment, start to finish

Prep looks like any gel service: nails shaped, cuticles pushed back and trimmed if needed, the shine buffed off the nail plate so the base coat has a surface to grip. A dehydrator or prep solution often goes on next, the same step that matters for gel polish adhesion generally.

Base coat goes on thin, cures under the lamp. Color follows in one or two coats, cured separately. Top coat seals the set and gets its own cure cycle. Most techs finish by wiping the tacky surface layer with cleanser or alcohol, which is what gives the finished shellac set its glass-like shine rather than a slightly sticky finish. Start to finish, a shellac manicure typically runs 30 to 45 minutes, faster than most enhancement services since there’s no building or shaping involved, just color over the natural nail.

Shellac vs generic gel polish

Functionally, they’re close enough that most people can’t tell the difference by wear alone. CND’s formulation has a reputation among techs for a particular flex and a slightly glossier finish compared to some budget gel polish lines, and pricing usually reflects that: salons charging for "shellac" specifically sometimes charge a small premium for the branded product. Wear time is comparable between shellac and most reputable generic gel polish brands, generally one to three weeks depending on nail growth and how the hands are used day to day.

If a salon’s menu lists "shellac" and "gel polish" as separate, differently priced services, ask what the actual difference is. Sometimes it’s genuinely a different product line. Sometimes it’s the same generic gel polish with "shellac" used as the more recognizable marketing term.

How long shellac lasts

Two to three weeks is the realistic range, similar to other gel polish. New growth at the cuticle becomes visible before the color itself fails in most cases, which is when people typically book a fill or full removal. Heavy hand use in water, frequent hand sanitizer application, or skipping cuticle oil between appointments can shorten that window.

Removing shellac

Same acetone soak-off process as any gel polish: file the shine off the top coat to break the seal, wrap in acetone-soaked cotton with foil, wait 10 to 15 minutes, then gently push the softened product away with a cuticle stick. Picking a lifted edge before the rest has softened is the most common way people damage their natural nails during shellac removal, not the product itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is shellac the same as gel nails?
Shellac is a specific brand of gel polish, though the term is used generically for gel polish overall. Functionally, both work the same way: a color coating cured under a UV or LED lamp.

How long does a shellac manicure last?
Two to three weeks on average, similar to other gel polish brands, depending on nail growth and daily wear.

Does shellac ruin your natural nails?
Not when applied and removed correctly. Damage typically comes from peeling the product off instead of soaking it in acetone.

Is shellac more expensive than regular gel polish?
Sometimes, since it’s a specific branded product line, but pricing varies by salon and doesn’t always reflect a meaningful difference in the finished result.

Can shellac be removed at home?
Yes, using the same acetone soak-off method as any gel polish. A full soak-off kit or foil wraps and pure acetone work; nail polish remover without acetone won’t dissolve gel-based shellac.
